In a world of ever advancing technology, where gaming is often synonymous with consoles, I'm here to take a different approach and look at board games.

I grew up with the old board game classics such as Monopoly, Game of Life, Risk, and Cluedo - admittedly alongside my NES, Sega Megadrive, and Playstation! Now that I have a growing family, not only have I enjoyed playing all sorts of console games with them but, as it's turned out, we also love sitting down around the table together and spending time over board games both old and new.

All the reviews on this page are board games that have been tried and tested by our family, so I hope they give you fresh inspiration for family gaming.

With so many different perspectives it can be hard to know where to start - a little like walking into a crowded pub. Sorry about that.

But so far we've not found a way to streamline our review output - there's basically too much of it. So, rather than dilute things for newcomers we have decided to live with the hubbub while helping new readers find the columnists they will enjoy.

What sort of gamer are you?

Our columnists each focus on a particular perspective and fall into one of the following types of gamers:
