Dark Void on PS3

Dark Void Screen Shots

Dark Void is a Shooting game available on the PS3. It can be played in Thirdperson Singleplayer modes.

Dark Void is a Shooting game. Shooting games present a world in which the character must shoot their way out of dangerous situations. They provide the player with an array of weapons tailored to specific tasks. This unavoidably involves a combination of fisticuffs and gun based fighting that dictates the violent nature of these experiences. Beneath this harsh exterior though is often an intricate tactile game - and this is usually what drives the player.

Dark Void can be played in a Thirdperson mode. Third Person games view the world from over the right shoulder of the character being controlled. This enables you to see the character you are controlling as well as their surrounds. Although not as immersive as first person, third person games enable more complex moves and interactions with the environment.

Dark Void can be played in a Singleplayer mode. Single Player Campaign games focus on one player's experience. Rather than collaborate with other players either locally or online, players progress alone. The campaign style of gameplay offers a connected series of challenges to play through. These chapters work together to tell a story through which players progress. Single player games are able to focus on one experience of a scenario, so that it is usually a richer, more visceral game.

Cover based jet-pack action is the battle cry of Dark Void, but to muted response. Intriguing world navigation ultimately failed to aid Dark Void's critical reception, perhaps due to its poor combat and creepy character design.

When I was five I went on vacation with my family. One night we went for dinner, and I ordered strawberries for dessert. As they arrived a performer began to mingle with the diners to entertain the kids. With a silver mask he robotically moved through the tables. I was terrified.

There's a moment in Dark Void when the mythos of the Void world, the history of the Bermuda Triangle and the shadow of World War Two come together and create a brief instant of epic storytelling. Unfortunately, that fleeting moment is buried under generic gameplay and a lurching narrative that lead towards an unsatisfying end which left me disappointed.

It's easy to dismiss Dark Void as a derivative 3rd-person shooter with a single gameplay addition that distinguishes it from its genre bedfellows. The lazy sound bite that constantly echoed inside my mind for the first few hours was 'Uncharted with jetpacks'. Not only would that be unfair on Naughty Dog's masterpiece but it would also be unfair on Dark Void. Not that the vertical cover mechanic or jetpack addition elevates this game anywhere near the level of Uncharted, but it does share a similar Matinee-film feeling.

Dark Void for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC is a totally unique 3rd person action shooter that combines aerial and ground combat with a gripping sci-fi storyline. With the action centring in an otherworldly dimension under the oppressive control of 'The Watchers', you'll fight enemies in a unique vertical landscape by using a powerful jet-pack. The blend of aerial combat and cover based shooting is seamlessly woven together in this genuinely fresh take on the shooter genre that offers an experience unlike any other.

All too often 3rd-person action shooters tread the same path that Gears of War paved four years ago. However, Dark Void for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC has a dramatic take on the genre that shows innovation and interesting story can still be found in videogame shooters.
