Soulful Gamer review Thu, 04 Feb 2010

Taking a familiar setting and building a compelling world around it is just one of Fallen Earths many successes. I was blown away by the depth and attention to detail this post-apocalyptic MMO portrayed and the manner with which I was drawn into its world. For a long time I have argued that online games cannot give a deep and meaningful experience due to their very nature - but theres more heart and soul here than in many other recent games. Whether I was delving deep into the crafting system, following the story or simply taking in the haunting environments, Fallen Earth took me on a journey into a world Ill never forget.

Bleak wastelands, nuclear fallout and zombies are some of the most overused settings in videogames and other modern media. For every highly original drama or existential art-piece there’s a thousand Mad Max clones and Fallout tributes all vying for the same space. That was the attitude that I went into Fallen Earth with; that no amount of unique gameplay or well-conceived online structure could rescue the game from painful and familiar mediocrity.

Intimate Gamer review Tue, 17 Nov 2009

Fallen Earth is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role Play Game (MMORPG) for people who want something that's a bit more Mad Max than Harry Potter. Set in a realistic post-apocalyptic world, and using first-person shooter dynamics, it's obviously trying to attract the hardcore gamer crowd. It's very, very pretty, and the quests are varied and fun, but after a while I found myself thinking - what's the point?

First there's the waiting for the download (and this one takes longer than most, at just under 5GB), then there's installing. Then you have to set up your account, and THEN you have to download and install the updates -- which despite the fact that the game was only released a day ago when I first loaded it up -- seemed to take almost as long as downloading the original files. Some really odd little thing always goes wrong which means you have to trawl the forums for a workaround solution. The set-up process for Fallen Earth reminded me of one of all of the very good reasons I intensely dislike the set-up processes for MMOs.
