Ferrari Challenge on Wii

Ferrari Challenge Screen Shots

Ferrari Challenge is a Racing game available on the Wii. It can be played in Singleplayer Competitive modes.

Ferrari Challenge is a Racing game. Racing games, although sometimes seen as a sporting sub category, are a well established video game genre in their own right.

Ferrari Challenge can be played in a Singleplayer mode. Single Player Campaign games focus on one player's experience. Rather than collaborate with other players either locally or online, players progress alone. The campaign style of gameplay offers a connected series of challenges to play through. These chapters work together to tell a story through which players progress. Single player games are able to focus on one experience of a scenario, so that it is usually a richer, more visceral game.

Ferrari Challenge can be played in a Competitive mode. Competitive Multiplayer games provide experiences where players compete against each other and the computer. Obviously lending itself to sports and team games, these competitive engagements have also dominated the shooting and fighting genres because of the direct combat and expertise involved in each. Although these games were originally played in a split screen style, more recently they are played online via services such as PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and the Nintendo Wireless Connection.

Ferrari Challenge Wii is a promising proposition, but ultimatley it doesn't deliver a genuine racing experience. If it were a car it'd be a Kia Rio. Let me explain.

The Kia Rio is a small, cheap Korean hatchback and although it doesn't look too bad, it doesn't exactly offer what you'd call the cutting edge in driving dynamics and if you got in expecting fun and excitement, you'd soon end up feeling somewhat disappointed. From a distance, the Rio isn't a bad looking little package but get up close and you soon see the rough edges.

Race Gamer review Tue, 15 Sep 2009

The Wii is not known for its grown up racing games. Ferrari Challenge breaks the mould with its attention to racing detail and commitment to delivering a real Gran Turismo style challenge. This is real racing, pure and simple.

This is the first 'proper' racing game I have tested for the Wii. Previous encounters with trying to use the Wii controller as a steering wheel were disappointing so I began this game with a fairly low expectation.
