Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3

Metal Gear Solid 4 Screen Shots

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a Shooting game available on the PS3. It can be played in Thirdperson Singleplayer Competitive modes.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is a Shooting game. Shooting games present a world in which the character must shoot their way out of dangerous situations. They provide the player with an array of weapons tailored to specific tasks. This unavoidably involves a combination of fisticuffs and gun based fighting that dictates the violent nature of these experiences. Beneath this harsh exterior though is often an intricate tactile game - and this is usually what drives the player.

Metal Gear Solid 4 can be played in a Thirdperson mode. Third Person games view the world from over the right shoulder of the character being controlled. This enables you to see the character you are controlling as well as their surrounds. Although not as immersive as first person, third person games enable more complex moves and interactions with the environment.

Metal Gear Solid 4 can be played in a Singleplayer mode. Single Player Campaign games focus on one player's experience. Rather than collaborate with other players either locally or online, players progress alone. The campaign style of gameplay offers a connected series of challenges to play through. These chapters work together to tell a story through which players progress. Single player games are able to focus on one experience of a scenario, so that it is usually a richer, more visceral game.

Metal Gear Solid 4 can be played in a Competitive mode. Competitive Multiplayer games provide experiences where players compete against each other and the computer. Obviously lending itself to sports and team games, these competitive engagements have also dominated the shooting and fighting genres because of the direct combat and expertise involved in each. Although these games were originally played in a split screen style, more recently they are played online via services such as PlayStation Network, Xbox Live and the Nintendo Wireless Connection.

Intimate Gamer review Thu, 26 Nov 2009

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is more of an interactive movie than a game, and as expected for such a cinematic experience, the relationships between the characters take up a good part of the screen time. I loved the well-crafted genuinely moving moments, and particularly the fact that there were a lot of strong women. However, I wish it could take its relationships as serious as the realities of war. I disliked the childish humour, the voyeuristic mini-games, oh and Snake's hiney.

As I played and watched (well, mainly watched) Metal Gear Solid 4, one of the things I noticed is that there were some great female characters in the game. In fact, I would go as far as to say that the women were stronger than the men. Snake himself, ravaged by rapid aging, is no longer the super soldier he once was, whereas his former love interest Meryl is as tough and more together as ever - although the same cannot be said for some of the members of her Rat Patrol team.

Family Gamer review Tue, 11 Sep 2007

Even when life was less busy, when the evenings stretched on into the darkness and the mornings were mine for the consuming, even back then for some reason I never turned my hand to Metal Gear Solid. This espionage action game now sees its fourth release and gives me more reason than ever to pop my Metal Gear cherry.

Since then a lot has changed, the family has grown and the aforementioned franchise has evolved. But strangely, now that my free time is scarcer, and I really should know better than considering getting involved, I feel more attracted than ever to don cat suit and armour in the world of Metal Gear.
