Shooting games present a world in which the character must shoot their way out of dangerous situations. They provide the player with an array of weapons tailored to specific tasks. This unavoidably involves a combination of fisticuffs and gun based fighting that dictates the violent nature of these experiences. Beneath this harsh exterior though is often an intricate tactile game - and this is usually what drives the player.
Shooting games usually comprise of a campaign mode (where the player works through a story) and multiplayer mode (where the player tries to out shoot other players before they themselves get shot).
First Person shooting such as Halo 3 360 are viewed through the eyes of the in-game character. Players can freely run around the environment working their way through each level. As graphics have improved these games are now able to render realistic renderings of the game world, endowing the player with an added sense of immersion.
Third Person shooting such as Fracture 360 or Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3 are played over the shoulder of the game character. Becuase the player is in view these games provide more hand-to-hand combat sections, and often enable them to hide behind cover.
On Rails shooting games give the player control over the direction of the gun but not the movement of the character. Like the lightgun based shooting games of old, they are taken down a preset path and tasked with shooting the various enemies as they pop-up. This is the videogaming equivalent of a shooting range.
Shoot 'em ups place the player in some craft or spaceship as they travel through a sideways scrolling environment. The play controls the flight of their craft, while the game automatically scrolls sideways. These games date back to classic arcade games such as the original Space Invaders. More recently games such as Ikarigua Gamecube have focused on dodging bullets as much as shooting. Players develop their reactions and bullet grazing (read: dodging) skills to progress through levels littered with munitions.
Alien Breed Evolution XBLA updates the Team 17 Amiga classic but stuggles to capture the frantic pace of the original. Placing you on a derelict ship in three moody dimensions gives the experience a graphical face-lift, but the methodical pace of play pales in comparison to the original panicked fire-fights.
Bioshock 2's PC multiplayer leverages the tragic events of the fall of Rapture as a straightforward, chaotic online shooter. It's a combination that probably shouldn't work, but does.
Call Of Duty Modern Warfare comes to the Wii with a Reflex moniker. Once you adjust to the Wii-mote controls there beats a great game. But, as usual, I'm all about the multiplayer, and for Call Of Duty Modern Warfare Reflex this comes in both online and campaign modes.
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 on Xbox 360, PS3 and the PC brushes aside its competitors with an epic single-player campaign and a vastly improved multiplayer mode. Fighting through the dusty villages and dark jungles of South America the Cold War gets even hotter as you try to prevent a deadly weapon falling into Russian hands. With improved destructibility enabling you to raze entire buildings to the ground, Bad Company 2 sets a new precedent for fun with its huge multiplayer maps and satisfying vehicular combat. If you can see it, then you can destroy it.
On paper, Damnation for 360 has some great ideas for story and gameplay. Unfortunately the game itself bungles all of these strong ideas with incompetent and uninspired execution, resulting in muddled tedium.
Remington's Great American Bird Hunt stands as a relic, a living fossil but on these terms it's almost lovable. It could perhaps be best compared to a Coelacanth in terms of where it stands in the evolution of light gun gaming. It seems to have ignored the advancements made in the genre by series such as Point Blank and Time Crisis, offering no discernable improvements over twenty year old titles.
Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles for Wii is a straightforward shooter that slickly revisits some of the series' highpoints, but which lacks the narrative depth of a core Resident Evil game.
Battlefield is frankly a brilliant game, Xbox Live Arcade or not. Quality maps, modes and attention to detail make this seem more like a big boxed title than a little download. How did they do that?
Valkyria Chronicles is stunningly unique in both visuals and strategic game design. A blend of calligraphy, Manga and war-time show reels, it looks like it plays - like nothing else on the PlayStation 3. But it was Valkyria Chronicles ability to make me care about each character that really hooked me in, and created some frightful decisions to make.
Left 4 Dead 2 for 360 and PC outdoes even its feted (fetid?) predecessor. But it takes the player to unearth the real story on offer here. Not the thin story of the main game, but the haphazard camaraderie that arises as you play with friends.
