Stacking - The Lost Hobo King has been released on XBLA and been provided for us to preview/review by the publisher.

Believe it or not we are still playing it. Here are some extracts of what we made of it in chronological order:

"Stacking didn't have me rushing to get under the skin of its nested dolls concept. Once inside though I found an intuitive and enjoyably challenging non-linear adventure that redefined my expectations..."
- Tech Gamer (Sun, 29 May 2011)

"Stacking: The Lost Hobo King XBLA takes Charlie Blackmore to the Hobo kingdom of Camelfoot in a snappily self-contained downloadable adventure..."
- Story Gamer (Mon, 02 May 2011)

"Stacking is an unsettling mesh of industrial revolution, socialism and stacking Russian dolls. However, it's the layered solutions to each puzzle and wonderfully simple interface that really makes this something special..."
- Scared Gamer (Sat, 23 Apr 2011)

"This week we talk about Stacking's compact gameplay, open structure and paradoxical mix of sinister fun..."
- Game People (Thu, 21 Apr 2011)

"Stacking is the latest in a procession of pure-joy inducing games from the bearded, indie geniuses at Double Fine Productions (its younger siblings being Psychonauts, BrĂ¼tal Legend and Costume Quest)..."
- Tired Gamer (Wed, 30 Mar 2011)

"Stacking XBLA may be set around the time of the great depression, but this utterly charming puzzler is anything but a downer..."
- Story Gamer (Mon, 21 Mar 2011)

Stacking - The Lost Hobo King XBLA Release

21/03/2011 09:30

Stacking extends its winning formula with a new adventure, locations and dolls. More of the same is often a derogatory term, but here it's exactly what the (game) doctor ordered.

After the success of the original downloadable title, Stacking, a follow-up adventure has been crafted for release. The Lost Hobo King is a new add-on that takes Charlie to the kingdom of Camelfoot to help his hobo friend Levi with an important family matter.

Extending the Matryoshka puzzling gameplay of the original, to help Levi recover his fragmented crown, Charlie must use his unique talents to overcome several tests of valour left by the ancient hobo mystics.

The Lost Hobo King DLC includes this new storyline, fresh environments to explore, and new challenges each with multiple solutions. Along the way you will discover 15 new unique dolls, each with new abilities and of course new achievements and trophies to collection.

Stacking: The Lost Hobo King will be released in April on both Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

Staking Announced

01/12/2010

Stacking uses nesting Russian dolls to create a character driven puzzle game with the confidence to let players solve challenges their own way.

Tim Schafer puts his name to another left-field production in the form of Stacking. In a similar playful vein to their recent game, Costume Quest (360), it's an adventure puzzle game starring a family of Russian stacking dolls separated by tough economic times. The youngest doll, Charlie Blackmore, begins a heroic effort to bring his family back together. But he's one size smaller than any other doll in the world.

Each puzzle revolves around the doll's size and ability to stack inside each other, with the usual cheeky swagger you'd expect from Double Fine - who also recently brought us Costume Quest. You can capture other dolls by stacking them together, whereupon (like Kirby) you inherit their abilities to solve the game's challenges.

Stacking promises a more open experience than usual with each puzzle having multiple solutions - and incentives to discover them all. This combines with new characters and side quests to suggest a full featured downloadable game.

Stacking will be released Spring 2011 on both Xbox LIVE Arcade and the PlayStation Network.

With so many different perspectives it can be hard to know where to start - a little like walking into a crowded pub. Sorry about that.

But so far we've not found a way to streamline our review output - there's basically too much of it. So, rather than dilute things for newcomers we have decided to live with the hubbub while helping new readers find the columnists they will enjoy.
