Prototype 2 has been released on PS3 and been provided for us to preview/review by the publisher.

Believe it or not we are still playing it. Here are some extracts of what we made of it in chronological order:

Prototype 2 PS3 Release

Prototype 2 sets right the wrongs of the first game, tasking us as the bringers of retributive violence. More flesh ripping is a given, but more interesting is whether the sequel manages to put this to interesting use.

Prototype 2 promises more open world shape shifting and body dismantling, but with a twist. The sequel casts you as Sgt. James Heller, travelling back to the city to destroy Prototype's original anti-hero, Alex Mercer.

The novelty of the first game was Mercer's ability to shape shift. This meant he could not only change his form to suit his enemy but quite literally consume them to regain health. It was an unusual approach to combat that led to some graphically violent and gory encounters as Mercer dispatched enemies in unsavoury ways.

Radical have a bigger team working on Prototype 2, and promise a more impressive experience. We've yet to find out how Heller's powers in this game match Mercer's in the original, but the more important question is whether Prototype 2's consumption of enemies can be anything more than gratuitous violence.

The rhetoric of "To destroy a monster you have to become one" and "Kill your maker" sound like a good step towards a more knowing use of violence. I'm looking forward to finding out whether this is just padding, or if the game genuinely challenges how comfortable we are playing like this.

Prototype 2 is expected to be released in 2012.

With so many different perspectives it can be hard to know where to start - a little like walking into a crowded pub. Sorry about that.

But so far we've not found a way to streamline our review output - there's basically too much of it. So, rather than dilute things for newcomers we have decided to live with the hubbub while helping new readers find the columnists they will enjoy.
