The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is a new action RPG from an independent developer, featuring a new take on the classic tale in an alternate Victorian era.

Nobody does gothic Eastern European Horror quite like the Eastern Europeans themselves and The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing has a good headstart in the atmosphere stakes (sorry!) in coming from a developer based in horror's old romping ground, Budapest.

All we have to go on so far are these wonderfully evocative art designs and the brooding cover art, but even these are enough to indicate a thorough imaginative take on the Van Helsing story, mixed in with some ever-popular steampunk design, mixing science and technology with a skewed historical setting.

The studio are no strangers to turning classic fiction into gameplay with their other titles, a series of fantasy roleplaying wargames based on the Arthur legend. However where those provide vast armies to command, Ven Helsing looks to be a more intimate kind of drama, with Van Helsing taking on his personal quest to rid the world of evil and monsters.

As an action RPG there's likely to be lots of sword swinging and gun-firing, rather than stand-offish clicking. Perhaps a good point of reference would be The Witcher 2 (360), also based on exciting and creepy European horror.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing is currently planned for release on the PC and XBox via XBLA towards the end of 2012.

With so many different perspectives it can be hard to know where to start - a little like walking into a crowded pub. Sorry about that.

But so far we've not found a way to streamline our review output - there's basically too much of it. So, rather than dilute things for newcomers we have decided to live with the hubbub while helping new readers find the columnists they will enjoy.
