Sports games recreate a wide variety of real life competitive activities. Depending on the sport, these will either have an action or strategy focus. Popular sports games are often released on an annual basis, each year the game receives new player rosters and game improvements.
More recently these sports games have started to provide the option of controlling a single player rather than the whole team. This gives the game an almost role play feel as the gamer works to develop their chosen character through the course of a season.
Wii-Sports Resort is still the most captivating experience on the Wii, and for good reason. Nothing better demonstrates the Wii's ability to entertain a wide range of gamers. With the MotionPlus Wii-mote attachment it offers divinely nuanced controls to create the King of motion controls. It'll be interesting to see how Kinect's energetic or Move's depth-aware motions compare to MotionPlus' fidelity.
Sports Champions challenges for Wii-Sport's crown with its ability to sense depth of play, alongside motion and orientation. This sounds like the perfect match for Table Tennis and Archery events.
Tour de France Online promises a lot but fails to connect effort with results. Playing once a day online like the real tour is a nice idea, but in reality I'd have preferred something a little less demanding.
Wii Sports Resort Cycling recreates the mesmerising sounds and sights of cycling, but didn't quite deliver the competitive riding experience I was hoping for.
International Cricket 360 goes first person and creates an authentic experience. These, and other, impressive design decisions are well delivered but without the finesse that would make this a really stand out cricketing game.
Tiger Woods 360 invigorates things with a 24 person multiplayer and Ryder cup mode. But it's hard to live without the Wii's real swing for anyone who plays in the real world.
Fifa 11 significantly advances the award-winning franchise with the introduction of Personality+ and a host of other changes that take the No.1 football videogame to new heights. New customisation options, an improved career mode and excellent multiplayer all combine to make this iteration of the series the most meaningful.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 has undergone a dramatic overhaul to bring the most advanced set of gameplay options to this latest version of the series. Utilising over 1000 new animations the game promises to deliver greater control and realistic looks to passing, shooting and crossing the ball. With a new power gauge and customisation options extending to custom stadiums, PES 2011 hopes to match its fiercest football rival step for step.
Water Sports Wii adds variety to your balance board fitness regime. Although limited in terms of gaming, it is good to see a game that places balance rather than weight-loss at the centre of its health plan.
International Cricket 2010 has me caught in two minds. It offers significant improvements to the genre in terms of realistic perspectives and intelligent tactics, but the experience is hamstrung by a limited single player mode. I'd love to have been bowled over, but as it is I'm remaining fairly stiff upper-lipped.
Tiger Woods 11 Wii crafts an addictively unique swing. It's most impressive because it responds to real golf technique, and has me practising even when I'm not playing.
Tiger Woods 11 Wii adds depth and fidelity to their MotionPlus enhanced real golf swing. This creates an experience that combines the best of previous versions, and offers something a little extra for golfing experts - video gaming and real world.
Kinect and Move join the Wii in motion gaming. As with Nintendo, it will be the games that make all the difference to both the success and popularity of this new technology.
Tiger Woods 11 may not reinvent the game, but for real world players or pro Wii golfers, it's the game of choice. Enhanced MotionPlus swinging and the new first person view combine to create a realistic rendition of my favourite pastime.
Your Shape Fitness Evolved makes convincing use of the 360's Kinetic controller.
Need for Speed returns to cop chases with Hot Pursuit, in the hands of the Burnout team.
EA Sports Active 2 monitors your every move for better feedback and fitness.
Kinect Sports 360 offers full-bodied competition, no strings.
Skate 3 courts the mainstream with sales targets and an all new, squeaky-clean city as well as team play, Own It and Kill It awards for each challenge and a much expanded online experience. However, despite several improvements, as a former skater, a part of me is mourning the loss of the rough-edged, dissenting streak of the previous outing.
The direct correlation between the Wii's controller and a golf club made these games a no-brainer for the Wii. Because of this, a number of games have been developed each with their own approach. Super Swing Golf provides a realistic one-to-one swing mechanic and some special moves, all wrapped up in a light hearted fun-focused rendering of the sport.
