I write family video game reviews. I want to play games with friends and family in the same place, as well as enjoy sharing the experience with my wife and kids. But as well as these there are precious late night gaming moments to fill. Throughout, time is of the essence.
Some people like to play free online games, but I'm more of a console kind of guy. I like being with people as I play, rather than communicating through a screen.
Welcome to my Family Gamer reviews, rough guides and articles for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS lite and PSP games. Read more about me.
Fossil Fighters DS triangulates the perfect combination of Dinosaurs, Fossil Hunting and card collecting. Our kids had no chance against such a rich vein of play. If you're not in the US, it's well worth importing, compared to the other DS Dinosaur games.
Wii-Sports Resort is still the most captivating experience on the Wii, and for good reason. Nothing better demonstrates the Wii's ability to entertain a wide range of gamers. With the MotionPlus Wii-mote attachment it offers divinely nuanced controls to create the King of motion controls. It'll be interesting to see how Kinect's energetic or Move's depth-aware motions compare to MotionPlus' fidelity.
Transformers: War for Cybertron swept me along with Prime, Ratchet and Bumblebee, back to the beginning of the troubles. New enough for my kids and yet old enough to evoke my own childhood, there was a lot to enjoy here.
Crackdown 2's wonderfully distracting world offers a rich place to play and hunt. Although, in the absence of split-screen multiplayer, we were restricted to turn-taking the playground spirit kept us going long into the night.
Heavy Rain PS3 is a remarkable achievement, although one that could have been so much more convincing. Dwarfed by its own expectations, there needed to be more humanity and acting going on for this to work. But in spite it all this is a very special game.
Toy Story 3 PS3 captured my wife's imagination as she unusually demanded to take control and compulsively set about collecting all the stars. This Toy Box open world, combined with the Story mode, is an impressive package. If you love to collect' em all, this game has loads to do with only a few rough edges causing occasional frustration.
Toy Story 3 imagination wins through to create a game of real variety. Creative moments abound in both the story and open world modes - one for all the family to enjoy, casual or hard-core.
Trivial Pursuits Wii struggles to make sense in the fast paced disconnected world of the video game. It ticks all the boxes but lacks that middle-class competitive spark that made the real thing a roaring success.
Coconut Dodge PSP keeps things vibrantly simple and creates a compulsive diversion for you and the kids. Don't ask why a crab would be collecting gems, instead just enjoy beating your previous score.
Lego Harry Potter's turnkey premise doesn't hold it back from advancing both game play and experience. Our family lapped up the co-op platforming and fell in love with the endearingly blocky rendering of Harry Potter's world.
