Physical games use real world cards, props and boards. Sometimes this complements a video game experience, but more often they simply exist as physical games in their own right. These games range from Eye of Judgement that uses a camera to detect which cards a player has, to interactive play experience like EyePet. Video games that make use of these props look to encompass the strong board gaming tradition that pre-dates and often outsells video games - such as Settlers of Catan or Carcassone.

Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure puts exquisite collectable toy figures to work in a videogame. Getting the best value from your collection is more than finding the cheapest price, or more recently finding them to buy at all, it's as much about choosing the toys that suit how you play the game... read now

We're having a lot of fun with co-operative board game Forbidden Island at the moment. Simply put, it's the best family game we've ever played. Lego's not what it used to be. A few years ago I would have ranted about compromising the simplicity and ingenuity of the old style kits with increasing gimmicks, specialised pieces and movie tie-ins. With so many different perspectives it can be hard to know where to start - a little like walking into a crowded pub. Sorry about that. But so far we've not found a way to streamline our review output - there's basically too much of it. So, rather than dilute things for newcomers we have decided to live with the hubbub while helping new readers find the columnists they will enjoy. |
