I
inFamous PS3

Adventure games are enjoyed for two reasons: they provide enemy encounters that require tactics and strategy to conquor, and they create a fantasy world in which to explore and adventure.

Adventure game exploration is usually driven by some particular plot-tension introduced early in the game that the player must resolve. As they adventure through the world, action sequences arise through encounters with enemies. Success here, but selecting the right characters with the appropriate equipment and skills then opens up more of the world to explore and provide new equipment.

Stealth adventure action games, such as Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3, have a greater emphasis on the player's ability to complete certain tasks without detection by the computer controlled characters. They usually provide an indicator of how visible the player is as they work their way through the environment. In addition to camouflage and hiding in shadows these games also enable the player to perform James bond style silent assassinations to continue on their way.

Action adventure games, such as Mirror's Edge PS3, have a greater emphasis on real time action. They only allow players to progress once technical section have been completed - these often rely on the players dexterity and familiarity with the controls.

Role play adventure games, such as Fable 2 360, have a greater emphasis on characterisation. The player not only progresses through the adventure but also levels up their team members to give them increased abilities against the various foes.

Pony Friends 2 DS simulates Pony ownership to a tee. Solid visuals, simple controls and surprising depth combine to offer an engaging experience.

LucasArts adventuring proves again its had its hay day - Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle and Grim Fandango this is not.

Endless Ocean 2: Treasures Of The Deep is an alternative RPG as well as casual underwater thrill. The follow up to Endless Ocean: Blue World ads some drama while keep the basic laid back premisce the same.

The second Lego Indiana Wii game is out now, but is the original still worth picking up too?

Endless Ocean 2: Adventures of the Deep brings a gentle and calming underwater adventure to the living room that, in spite of the Wii's awkward motion controls, succeeds in transporting you to a serene world.

Mass Effect 2 on PC and Xbox 360 is a beautifully crafted space opera from the characters to gameplay. Technically too, this is simply a much better game, benefiting from techniques that improve every aspect and bring a fulfilling game full of jaw dropping moments and brilliant gameplay.

Just how different is Zelda to Grand Theft Auto, you be the judge? Here's what I drew with my mouse after playing The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks on the Nintendo DS.

Mass Effect Galaxy, like the books, is a great way to extend your Mass Effect fix beyond the main cannon. On iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad this is unashamedly the Mass Effect Universe, although here with its wings severely clipped.

Mass Effect 2 is one of the greatest video games that I have ever played. The subtle links to the first game, the standard of character writing and the universe detail gave me an experience I quite literally fell in love with.

Pitfall The Big Adventure threatens to regurgitate the old platformer, but through boxy visuals and ported gameplay emerges a better game than expected. The Wii needs more adventures like this, but on crowded shelves this is likely to go unnoticed.
