Mini games come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What unites the genre is the speed with which players can pickup the games and the relativley short time requried to complete a level or two.

Party mini games provide short bursts of fun themed around novel leisure activities. In contrast to sports games that try and recreate the whole experience, party games take one element and create a game around that. As their name suggests party games are designed to be played with multiple players and work well in a party situation - either an after dinner event or a novelty in the corner of the room throughout the evening.

Puzzle games pose the player a problem to solve, and then provided a limited set of tools with which to solve it. This can be as simple as arranging 2D blocks on top of each other, or as complex as balancing objects in a 3D environment. The initial interaction is what usually hooks players in for the first few hours, but it is the game's ability to scale both the size and complexity of each puzzle that distinguishes the truly excellent experiences.

Fossil Fighters DS triangulates the perfect combination of Dinosaurs, Fossil Hunting and card collecting. Our kids had no chance against such a rich vein of play. If you're not in the US, it's well worth importing, compared to the other DS Dinosaur games.

Super Scribblenauts DS does more than fix the physics. With 800 new objects and countless adjective driven variations there are more ways to solve each puzzle than ever.

Mon, 23 Aug 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Pac-Man Party offers a rainy day board game that brings together a raft of power-pelleted infested minigames.

Sun, 22 Aug 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Manic Monkey Mayhem PSP sounds exciting frantic and fun, but isn't. It's rather shallow and lacking any real spark or vibrancy. Offering no storyline or variety in its game play, it wasn't long until it was cast aside in favour of more enjoyable pastimes.

Jewel Quest Mysteries: Curse of the Emerald Tear DS is as ecelectic as it gets. Search for all manner of unusual objects as the game test your powers of observation.

Wed, 11 Aug 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Animal Kororo DS is a bizarre puzzle game. Flicking little cretures around the screen became surprisingly addictive though. I couldn't resist the fun of having so much power over such cute little creatures.

Sat, 24 Jul 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Coconut Dodge PSP keeps things vibrantly simple and creates a compulsive diversion for you and the kids. Don't ask why a crab would be collecting gems, instead just enjoy beating your previous score.

Mon, 19 Jul 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Rooms is a rearrange the pictgure, sliding puzzle game. Although common on the DS, on the Wii these sort of games are rarer and this offers an unusual challenge.

Tue, 29 Jun 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Rooms is a sliding puzzle game, that follows up the recent popularity of hidden object and brain training on the Nintendo DS.

Wed, 23 Jun 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Penguin Club Herbert's Revenge lets kids take their Disney MMO with them where ever they go. Connected, interactive and a lot of fun - this is a seriously well thought through proposition.

Wed, 23 Jun 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Squeeballs Party is a cuter more sadistic, and more entertaining version of Wii-Sports. Sure, Wii-Sports may have nuanced motion controls, but only Squeeballs lets you launch creepy critters or make hot dogs out of your little friends. Of course, not all people will see the above as positives. It helps that this game perfectly fits my eclectic sense of humour.

Rooms turns sliding puzzles from a simple distraction on long car journey's to something much more exciting. The combination of puzzle elements and reconstructing the picture from the tiles makes this game as good for me as it is for my younger sister.

Tue, 15 Jun 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Medieval Games Wii crosses board games with party gaming in a Middle Ages setting. Sadly though, for multiplayer gamers it fails pretty miserably.

Wed, 02 Jun 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Professor Layton and Pandora's Box taps right into my eclectic gaming nerve and doesn't let go until I'm satisfied. There's so much here to explore, absorb and finally solve.

Tue, 25 May 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Aqua Panic maybe a by the numbers puzzle game, but with genuine charm and wide-ranging well-balanced levels there is more value here that I expected. I even got some of my hard-core shooter fan friends hooked on it.

Sun, 23 May 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Women's Murder Club: Games of Passion adapts James Patterson's best-selling novel series into a hotch-potch game of hidden objects and generic mini-games barely held together by a dull story and flat characters.

Wed, 12 May 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Globulos Party brings its spherical creature based minigames from the browser to DSi-Ware. Personality and simplicity delight younger players while the multiplayer modes court interest from the rest of the family.

Fri, 07 May 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Dora Puppy DS is a break from twinning portable games with the Wii version. Instead, this is a completely original title - rather than the previous DS version of the Wii game. This enables it to walk its own path, offering a mix of minigames and pet care for younger players.

Mon, 03 May 2010 Share: Twitter | facebook

Taking you back to the 19th Century with its times of exploration and discovery, Around the World in 80 Days was a surprisingly challenging puzzle game. Working through 80 days of puzzles was an interesting concept and the early levels were great fun for the kids and me but the game was undone by its unnecessary length and brutal difficulty level.
