Mini games come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What unites the genre is the speed with which players can pickup the games and the relativley short time requried to complete a level or two.
Party mini games provide short bursts of fun themed around novel leisure activities. In contrast to sports games that try and recreate the whole experience, party games take one element and create a game around that. As their name suggests party games are designed to be played with multiple players and work well in a party situation - either an after dinner event or a novelty in the corner of the room throughout the evening.
Puzzle games pose the player a problem to solve, and then provided a limited set of tools with which to solve it. This can be as simple as arranging 2D blocks on top of each other, or as complex as balancing objects in a 3D environment. The initial interaction is what usually hooks players in for the first few hours, but it is the game's ability to scale both the size and complexity of each puzzle that distinguishes the truly excellent experiences.
Babysitting Mania for DS may provide a chaotic challenge, but won't please anyone who actually likes babies or children.
Cate West: The Vanishing Files is an addictive seek-and-find puzzler with an intriguing, mystical story line. Its simple gameplay on the Nintendo DS makes it easy to pick up when you just fancy a quick puzzle, while the storyline draws you on just to find out what happens next.
Rayman Raving Rabbids TV Party offers a last throw of the foaming crazy dice. Although the Rabbids still struggle to roll a six, and have a few technical issues, there is fun to be had here because of the sheer weight of TV show inspired minigames and endearing visuals.
101-in-1 Party Megamix on the Nintendo Wii brings bag loads of activities to the living room. But a nondescript style and quantity over quality approach mean that 101-in-1 Party Megamix struggles to make itself heard over the hoards of similar titles on the Wii.
Echoes is a good examples of frivolous gaming. It's one of the new PSP Mini range that are soon playable on the PS3 as well. As such, it doesn't offer anything more than a distraction compared to meatier games. What it does offer though is challenging fun for five minutes, even if it's not exactly thought provoking. More suited to PlayStation Portable then than big brother PS3
After the success of the first season of 1 vs 100 on Xbox 360's live service, season 2 is back to challenge our general knowledge between 19th of November and February 14th 2010. The format has been updated a little, but essentially remains to be a fresh quiz game format that captures the thrill and tension of our beloved Friday night TV shows.
Much like Echoes, Blast Off is another great example of a game that you can dip in and out of. Fitting it's PSP Mini format well, it might not be the lengthiest of games nor the most complicated of games but it is certainly enjoyable. Blast Off on the PlayStation Portable is that strange combination between compulsion and frustration that at times came close to being thrown out of the window.
The technical feat of moving from the 360 to multi-platform is traversed well by Scene It? Bright Lights! Big Screen!. This sequel is released simultaneously on Xbox 360, Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. Although not without tough technical challenges, Scene It? Bright Lights! Big Screen! intelligently keeps the focus squarely on the quality of clips and questions.
Maboshi Arcade at first seems to be a simple set of casual games, but turns out to be intricately linked puzzle experience that is as compelling as Tetris or Puzzle Bubble ever was. This is one of the best uses of the Nintendo Wii's Wii-Ware channel I've seen so far.
Scene It? Bright Lights! Big Screen! brings the 360 Scene It? film quiz to both PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii as well as updating the series as a whole. While the release is not without compromise to make it cross-platform, it continues to create a family friendly movie quiz experience around a strong set of questions.
