The Xbox 360 is Microsoft's second console after entering the video game world with the original Xbox. The 360 was the first of its generation to be released. Whilst continuing their focus on high specification visuals and sound, they largley used this time to develop a raft of online features available in all games on the system - Xbox live.
The console is unique because of this pioneering work in its online community. Xbox Live charged players an anual fee of around GBP30 to subscribe to the service. This enabled players to compete and co-operate in games over the internet. As opposed to the Wii's play together in the same room approach, this connected players all over the world. Accordingly, many Xbox 360 console limit the number of players on one console to focus instead on online play and visual fidelity. The service also enabled players to track their progress through games and maintained an overall score across different games - Achievement Points.
The 360 controller and console is more traditional. Twin analogue sticks and a plethoror of buttons enable games to use complex controls to create engaging experiences. The system can come without a harddrive, although this is essential for playing games online and taking advantage of these features.
The 360's weakest point has been its reliability. The failure rate of early consoles has been extreamly high, although these issue have now been largley ironed out. Additionally, gamers without an internet connection are limited in their multiplayer options, as fewer games provide a local multiplayer, prefering instead the online modes. Finally, there are quite features (standard on the PS3) not included in the basic 360 setup - wireless internet and Bluray being the most significant two when making comparisons.
The ongoing popularity of the 360 reflects the fact that these issues are by no means show stoppers. Supported by a strong lineup of cheap xbox 360 games, and the aforementioned Xbox live service, and with a new family friendly interface, it continues to defend its spot in the current generation of gamers.
Here are the latest 360 games we have been playing:
Halo Reach offers us a chance to 'remember' Noble Team and create a real world monument. Over the next three weeks, visitors can contribute a point of light to form the statue.
In today's Scripted Gamer Fred and Bob discuss heroes, villains and really bad jokes.
Crackdown 2 360 takes Agents back to a ruined Pacific City, but while super-powered crime fighting is as irresponsibly fun as ever, this sequel fails to advance either the series or its story.
Here is my musical review of Resident Evil 5 on the 360, I've called it 'Don't Shoot Them'.
In Today's Scripted Gamer Fred and Bob discuss heroes, villains and really bad jokes
Dead Rising 360 remains a unique and surprisingly playful take on the zombie genre, one which encouraged players to approach its story from several different directions. It's a game that defies the idea of a single successful 'play through'.
Transformers: War for Cybertron swept me along with Prime, Ratchet and Bumblebee, back to the beginning of the troubles. New enough for my kids and yet old enough to evoke my own childhood, there was a lot to enjoy here.
Fable 2 is a different game each time you play it, we get three writers at different stages to talk through their experience on the podcast.
Red Faction Armageddon expands the original's fully destructible world. New ways to cause architectural chaos and build political capital take us back to the caves of Mars.
Blur's combat racing is reminiscent of Wipeout with a lot more bite. The ever-present unsettling moment of collision turns what could have been a lightweight kart racer into something much more gnawing and gnarly.
Mass Effect 2 cut much of what I loved from the first game. But with this much majesty and mystery on offer, who cares. Mustering the cultural sensibilities of a Mos Eisley space Bar, I could do little but jump in with both feet and explore.
In today's Scripted Gamer Fred and Bob discuss heroes, villains and really bad jokes.
Arkham City takes centre stage for the next Batman game as we settle down for the long wait. In the meantime we have to console ourselves with the Wii/DS Batman - The Brave and the Bold.
Medal of Honour courts two kings as it returns to modern parlance. On multiplayer terms this split personality needs some focus if it is going to convince either Modern Warfare 2 or Battlefield Bad Company 2 players away from their betrothed.
Call of Duty: Black Ops takes us on a darker journey into the Cold War. It traverses the Thatcher-Regan era as you fight with Black Ops soldiers through Vietnamese jungles to the snowy Ural mountains. Of course there's more of the standard-setting multiplayer, but this is now joined by 4-player online and 2-player local co-op and a fully featured Wii version.
Crackdown 2's wonderfully distracting world offers a rich place to play and hunt. Although, in the absence of split-screen multiplayer, we were restricted to turn-taking the playground spirit kept us going long into the night.
International Cricket 360 goes first person and creates an authentic experience. These, and other, impressive design decisions are well delivered but without the finesse that would make this a really stand out cricketing game.
How To Train Your Dragon 360 does what it says on the tin: you train dragons. Unfortunately, you don't get to do much else, which leads to a lot of back-tracking, resource gathering and basic combat.
Episode one of Scripted Gamer digs into the latest trend in Western gaming. Even Fred and Bob, our theatrical reviewers, found a happy helping of gun slinging to be had here.
Halo 3 brings together realistic enemies, tense moments of encounter and knife edge multiplayer. In this podcast, we dig into just how far Halo has come, and how well it stands the test of time.
