What We've Been Playing

This is where we take the chance to talk about what we have been playing and what's worked well for our families, from a newcomer and experienced perspective.

This week we talk about the following games:

Gaming Surgery

This is where we get to answer your questions about family gaming. This week's question is:

How do I setup Online Controls for my family on the Xbox 360?

Setting up Online controls complements the Parental controls we talked about last week, and enable you to control how your family interacts with services and other players online on the Xbox 360. It is also another good chance to better understand how you play games online as a family.

This enables you to specify how family members share information online, communicate via voice and video, what marketing they see as well as how friend requests are handled. There are a lot of great social functions to online gaming, but it is important to understand how these work for a safe online experience.

  1. Turn on the 360 console.
  2. Sign into your Xbox LIVE account on your console.
  3. Go to My Xbox, and then select your avatar.
  4. Go to Online Safety, and then select Change Settings.
  5. Select Customize.
  6. Change the settings to whatever you’d like.
  7. To exit press the B on your controller, and then choose Save and Exit.

Appearing in this Episode

Andy Robertson appears in this podcast. "Videogame reviews for the whole family, not just the kids. I dig out videogame experiences to intrigue and interest grownups and children. This is post-hardcore gaming where accessibility, emotion and storytelling are as important as realism, explosions and bravado."

Tim Pestridge appears in this podcast. "I like bikes and video games because they both spark my imagination and provide seemingly infinite possibilities and just generally make me smile."

With so many different perspectives it can be hard to know where to start - a little like walking into a crowded pub. Sorry about that.

But so far we've not found a way to streamline our review output - there's basically too much of it. So, rather than dilute things for newcomers we have decided to live with the hubbub while helping new readers find the columnists they will enjoy.

What sort of gamer are you?

Our columnists each focus on a particular perspective and fall into one of the following types of gamers:
